Ed Simpson is staring down the barrel of his second Christmas running his shop, the Godalming Food Company. And just like last year, business is good...

For many years Ed worked in corporate strategy in the city, but having moved to Godalming, he fell in love with the abundant food and produce that exemplifies the area. Choosing to pursue his passion for great food and drink, he opened the Godalming Food Company on the high street beneath the shadow of the town’s iconic Pepperpot, creating one of the most eclectic food shops and delis for miles around.

“It did feel like a gamble at first. It’s been hard work but very rewarding,” he said. “When you get customers coming back, you get to know them and that makes it all very worthwhile.” The hard work has clearly paid off as this year his company was a finalist in the Surrey Life Food and Drink Awards for independent retailer of the year.

“We place an emphasis on local, independent producers, things you won’t find in supermarkets.” He means it, too. Walking into the Godalming Food Company is to enter a foodie paradise with shelves and counters teeming with amazing food and drink. Fresh bread baked locally, an ever-changing selection of gorgeous cheeses from the UK and the continent, deli olives, condiments, stunning charcuterie, pates and smoked fish; it’s all here and it’s all of the highest quality.

There’s a staggering variety of artisan chocolate on offer too, chocolate being an early priority for Ed when sourcing his products. Ed also stocks a fantastic range of wines, ciders, and local beers and ales from the Hogs Back Brewery, alongside a number of non-alcoholic fruity alternatives.

This being the Christmas season though, there’s an even better reason to visit the Godalming Food Company: Christmas Hampers! Following the success of his hampers last year, this year Ed has assembled the best of his products into a Taste of Surrey Gift Tray (£39); a Christmas Hamper (£65) and a Luxury Hamper (£100). Better yet, you can assemble your own custom hamper from any of the products on offer in the shop and online. In addition to all these goodies, you can get all your festive fromage in one place with a handpicked selection of Christmas cheese boards.
